AAA Contrasts Regular/Premium Fuel

If you believe you're doing your car a favor by pumping in premium gasoline, think again as it might not always be the case.  AAA's Kimberly Schwind said for most vehicles, car performance will be just as good, whether you used regular or premium.

Schwind noted that some cars do require premium, and in that case, it should be used. She also said in situations, such as towing, hauling cargo, or aggressive acceleration, motorists may see a benefit from using premium.

"These benefits may not outweigh the high cost of this premium fuel," said Schwind.

GasBuddy.com has the average price for a gallon of regular in Columbus was at $2.40 on Friday, while premium was selling for about $2.65 a gallon.  One station in the Polaris area is reported to be asking $3.59 for a gallon of premium.

"We have found that the price difference between premiere and regular gasoline has increased from 10-25% or about 50 cents per gallon difference between the cost of regular gasoline and the cost of premium gasoline," said Schwind.
