The Roanoke Fire Department was dispatched at 6:29 a.m. to Famous Anthony's in the 6400 block of Williamson Road.
The restaurant as open and people were eating inside, but no one was hurt.
Fire officials said they believe the explosion happened near or due to the freezer.
The Roanoke County Fire Marshal is investigating the incident.
