Zane Trace Baseball Tourney Hopes Dashed by Athens

The Zane Trace Pioneers saw their hopes of advancing to the district tournament go by the way-side Thursday, falling 5-2 at Athens in the Division 2 Sectional Final.

The Pioneers (20-8) got on the scoreboard first with a run in the top of the third inning, but the Bulldogs answered with the tying run in their half of the same inning, then added three runs in the fourth and another in the fifth for a commanding 5-1 lead.

ZT crossed the plate with a run in the sixth inning to shave Athens' lead to 5-2, which ended up being the final score.

Jack Cornwell got the win for Athens, working out of jams throughout the game, including the Pioneers scoring inning in the third inning when they had bases loaded and nobody out, but managed only a single run. Zane Trace had other scoring threats in the fourth, when they stranded a runner in scoring positions, as well as two more runners left on after scoring their second run in the sixth.

Athens improves to (19-6) and will play Sheridan at Ohio University on Monday. The Generals won a sectional crown with an 11-1 win over McClain.

The Circleville Tigers repeated as sectional champs with a 3-0 victory over Fairfield Union. The Tigers, who ran the table to the State Final Four last year, will face Warren at 7pm Monday, also at Ohio University. Warren beat Marietta 5-4 in their D-2 sectional championship.
