Waverly Wins Defensive Struggle Over Unioto for Sectional Crown

Trailing 25-20 late in the third quarter, Waverly finished on an 18-9 run for a 38-34 Division 2 Sectional Championship win over Unioto, Saturday at Southeastern High School.

The score remained close throughout the contest and saw the Tigers 31-27 lead cut to 31-30 in the fourth quarter, but Waverly went on a 7-1 sprint to 38-32, before the Shermans cut it to four for the final score of 38-34.

The score by quarters saw Waverly up 9-8 after one period, but Unioto's Isaac Little drilled a three-pointer at the buzzer for a 20-18 lead at halftime. Unioto's biggest lead was 25-20 late in the third and held a slim 25-24 lead after three. Waverly got the strong finish for the 38-34 win.

The Tigers shot 15/31 from the floor- including 3/7 from the arc for 48% and added 5/11 from the foul line. Unioto was 14/36- including 4/13 from the arc for 39%, and added 2/3 at the charity stripe. Both teams had 17 rebounds, with Waverly committing 10 turnovers and Unioto 7.

Trey Robertson led the Tigers with 18 points, with Will Futhey adding 8, Tanner Smallwood and Zeke Brown each with 6 points. Futhey also had 7 rebounds.

Unioto's Isaac Little led the Tanks with 17 points, while Josh Lambert and Reece Wheeler each had 5, Nate Keiser with 4 and Cam Debord with 3.

(20-4) Unioto closes their season as SVC Co-Champs and sectional runner-up.

(19-5) Waverly advances to the February 29th District Semi at the OU Convo vs Warren at 7pm. Warren outlasted Fairfield Union in overtime, 46-43.
