Pioneer Advocates & Local Legislators Collaborate

Local legislators and a group of advocates for individuals with disabilities gathered at Creekside Occasions this week to discuss topics of importance to the DD community. Pioneer advocates met ahead of time to brainstorm and prepare for their meetings with legislators. The group prioritized the issues of affordable housing, transportation, accessibility and education to discuss.

“We are very grateful to the legislators that took the time to have meaningful conversations with our advocates,” said Superintendent of the Pioneer Center, Amy Beeler. “It was inspiring to hear the collaboration going on in the room”.

Local leaders in attendance included Chillicothe Mayor Luke Feeney, Chillicothe Police Chief Ron Meyers, City Council members Deidra Nickerson & Jamie Brown, Ross County Commissioner James Lowe, Ross County Sheriff George Lavender, State Representative Mark Johnson and Kelli Johnson representing the office of Senator JD Vance. The event was structured with small group discussion so that each advocate could share their individual story and the issues most important to them. Legislators were seen taking notes and engaging with each individual. The Board of Elections was also on-site to help individuals register to vote.

The Pioneer Center, otherwise known as Ross County Board of DD (RCBDD), exists for the purpose of improving the quality of life for citizens who have a developmental disability. RCBDD is committed to providing quality services that give individuals and their families choices that enhance community participation and achieve a life of increasing capabilities.
