Jim Butt, the leader of the Chillicothe Elks
About Birthday of the American Flag, but Not Flag Retirement…the Elk’s Lodge…and “Beans”
The flag of the United States is important to the the Elks fraternal group, and they celebrate the birth of the American flag every June 14th.
The leader of the Chillicothe Elks spoke with me about their ceremony at 2pm on Saturday. Jim Butt said it will take about half an hour, and be on their porch if it’s dry, and inside if it rains. Several historical flags will be part of the display.
He corrected me about who properly disposes of worn-out flags – that is the American Legion. But he said that if anyone brings one to retire, Butt will see that it gets to the correct group.
Butt has also established a foundation to prevent suicide, inspired by his son James. Read more about that in his sponsorship of a Pump House show.
The lodge of the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks lodge Number 52 is a historic 1826 bank building with a grand 1911 ballroom addition. Their front porch is set up for viewing the Kenworth Truck Parade Saturday evening. You can find them on their Facebook page.
Hear Jim Butt in his own words below. (I asked him about items other than Flag Day that he may not have been prepared to answer!)
